Three separate people asked me JUST TODAY where I get the vegetables, fruits and general produce for the recipes here and which is pictured in the various breakfasts, lunches and dinners I post on twitter. There are two answers - one for locals (Orlando/Winter Park) and a more general answer for those of you in other parts of the country/world:
Locals (this is not an exclusive list - there are more and I will add them):
- Winter Park Village Publix has an excellent produce section, complete with a LOT of organic selections (organic dandelion greens in regular and red stem currently in season)
- Chamberlain's Winter Park Village, though sometimes double check the freshness of the individual items before purchasing
- Fresh Market in Altamonte Springs or Dr. Phillips has some of the best produce around
- Whole Foods Winter Park and Sand Lake Road of course
- Local Farmer's Markets:
- Maitland - Lake Lily Park Sundays
- Winter Park - Downtown Winter Park Saturdays
- Audubon Park - Parking Lot of Stardust Monday nights 6-10PM
- College Park - Parking Lot of Infusion Tea Thursdays 5-9PM
- Orlando Organic Co-op www.homegrowncoop.org
- Eat More Produce produce stand on 17-92 across from Lombardi's
Non-Locals - general guidelines - look for the following in your community:
- Research your local grocery store options for convenient day-of purchases, or when you get a crazy craving for fennel - you know where to go
- Keep your eyes open for farmer's markets online or in your local paper or weekly
- See if your community has a Slow Foods organization - these are primarily geared at pure foodies, but we have a lot of crossover with people who care where their food comes from!!!
- Brave the local hipster hangouts to find out about organic coops in your area, see if you can find a CSA or other oranization to help you easily purchase (and sometimes have delivered to your home) fresh local organic produce.
